CNN —Major League Baseball fans had an unexpected buzz on Tuesday after a swarm of bees delayed the Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Los Angeles Dodgers game for around two hours. With no end in sight to the snafu, the call went out to bee wrangler Matt Hilton, who was summoned from his son’s baseball game to the big leagues to tackle the problem. Beekeeper Matt Hilton reacts to fans before throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. This year’s Indian Wells tournament saw a lengthy delay to the quarterfinal between Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev after a swarm of bees descended on the court. Last year, some 20,000 bees took center stage at an Irish cricket match in Cork.

CNN —Carlos Alcaraz won his first trophy since Wimbledon last year as he successfully defended his Indian Wells title against Daniil Medvedev. The 20-year-old Spaniard is also the first person to win back-to-back Indian Wells titles since Novak Djokovic in 2016. The second set was more straight forward for Alcaraz as he broke Medvedev twice – at 1-0 and 4-1 – before completing the victory in an hour and 42 minutes when the world No. Mark J. Terrill/APEarlier on Sunday, Iga Świątek also won her second Indian Wells title as she defeated Greece’s Maria Sakkari 6-4 6-0. US actor Ben Stiller was one of many impressed with his work, writing on X: “Bee Invasion Guy is very cool. Fearless.”After his somewhat unusual win, Alcaraz will now face Jannik Sinner in the semifinals of the tournament. If nothing else, he’ll hope he can just get on with his tennis without being mobbed by another invasion of bees.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Jannik Sinner rallied from two sets down to take the Australian Open final from Daniil Medvedev 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 on Sunday and clinch his first Grand Slam title. He’s the first Italian to win the Australian Open title in what could be a generational shift in tennis. For 2021 U.S. Open champion Medvedev, the loss was his fifth in six major finals. Nobody had done that on the way to an Australian Open final since Pete Sampras in 1995. In the sixth game of the fifth set, Sinner had triple breakpoint against a fatiguing Medvedev.

Sinner ended defending champion Novak Djokovic’s 33-match winning streak at the Australian Open, a run stretching back to 2018, to reach his maiden grand slam final, where he will face Russia’s Daniil Medvedev on Sunday. Djokovic’s bid for a record-extending 11th Australian and 25th major title overall will have to wait. MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — A solitary loss in 11 semifinals at the Australian Open was nowhere near enough for Novak Djokovic to contemplate a generational change in tennis. Djokovic didn't get a look at a breakpoint during a 6-1, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-3 loss to Jannik Sinner on Friday that ended the 10-time Australian Open champion's unbeaten streak after making the final four at Melbourne Park. “This tournament hasn’t been up to my standard or criteria or the level that I would normally play or expect myself to play,” Djokovic said, "but doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s beginning of the end, you know, as some people like to call it. But no man has won more Grand Slam titles than Djokovic, who lifted his record to 24 with three titles last year when he went 27-1 in the majors tournaments. Stan Wawrinka’s title here a decade ago was the only Australian title that one of the Big Three didn’t win since Marat Safin beat Lleyton Hewitt in the 2005 final.

The 22-year-old Sinner will now contest the first grand slam final of his career having ended Djokovic’s bid for an 11th title in Melbourne. It also means that Djokovic’s pursuit of an outright record 25th grand slam title is put on hold after he was outplayed by the Italian across their three hour, 22-minute contest. “It was a very, very tough match,” Sinner said in his on-court interview. “I guess this is one of the worst grand slam matches I’ve ever played – at least that I remember. Indeed, this was the first time in his career that Djokovic failed to produce a break-point chance in a completed grand slam match, according to Opta.

CNN —Tennis player Alexander Zverev is set to face trial later this year after being accused of physical abuse against a woman, according to a spokesperson for the Berlin Criminal Courts. He denied the allegations and lodged an appeal, meaning the case will be heard in a Berlin district court. However, the court spokesperson said Zverev does not need to be present at the trial unless Berlin’s Tiergarten district court decides otherwise. CNN has asked Zverev’s lawyers whether he intends to be present at the trial but has yet to receive a response. In October 2021, the ATP, the governing body for men’s professional tennis, said it was launching an investigation after domestic abuse allegations were made by another of Zverev’s former girlfriends, Olya Sharypova.

Nov 16 (Reuters) - Alexander Zverev said he will be cheering on rival Daniil Medvedev to beat second seed Carlos Alcaraz at the ATP Finals on Friday, as it will boost his chances of reaching the semi-finals of the season-ending championship in Turin, Italy. Medvedev became the first player through to the semis with a 7-6(7) 6-4 victory over Zverev, and the German now needs the third seed to beat 20-year-old Alcaraz. "I've never won a second round-robin match at this event and I won the tournament twice ... that obviously gives me hope," Zverev told reporters. I have to be focused and be ready ... ready to beat Andrey." Medvedev said he understood why Zverev wants him to win, but it would not be an easy against the two-time Grand Slam winner Alcaraz.

TURIN, Italy (AP) — Andrey Rublev grew so frustrated during a 7-5, 6-2 loss to Carlos Alcaraz at the ATP Finals on Wednesday that he repeatedly hit himself with his racket — so hard that he bloodied his left knee. Rublev had already slammed his racket to the ground during the opening game of the second set. In a first career meeting, it was a tight first set until Alcaraz broke for a 6-5 lead. Rublev called it an “unlucky call.”“But it’s part of the sport,” he said. ... Just happen that it was important (point).”In the next game, Rublev bloodied himself.

World number two Alcaraz suffered an opening round-robin defeat by Alexander Zverev, but responded with a confident display, albeit against an unravelling Russian. Rublev managed to hang on in the first set but wavered at 5-5 when he dropped his serve -- Alcaraz then claiming the opening set with a comfortable hold. Things deteriorated rapidly for Rublev when he dropped serve at the start of the second set. Alcaraz took complete control after that with Rublev seemingly playing against the Spaniard and himself. This is the level I have to play if I want to give myself a chance in this amazing tournament," Alcaraz said.

Nov 14 (Reuters) - When Carlos Alcaraz beat Novak Djokovic to win Wimbledon in July it seemed the Spaniard's stratospheric career trajectory was limitless and he would take a stranglehold on men's tennis. A few months later, however, 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic has re-asserted his authority and Alcaraz is experiencing the first slump of his career. The 20-year-old bemoaned the fast playing conditions in Turin after a surprise loss to Germany's Alexander Zverev in his opening match at the ATP Finals on Monday. Daniil Medvedev, whose defeat of Alcaraz in the U.S. Open semi-final exposed some cracks in the Spaniard's game, says that a dip was to be expected at some point. Alcaraz will face Rublev in Red Group on Wednesday when defeat could end his hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

TURIN, Italy (AP) — If Jannik Sinner was feeling any pressure as the crowd’s overwhelming favorite at the ATP Finals, the Italian certainly didn’t show it during a 6-4, 6-4 win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the opening match at the season-ending event for the year’s top eight players. CNN —German tennis star Alexander Zverev has been given a penalty order and fined €450,000 ($478,000) by a Berlin court after being accused of physical abuse against a woman, according to a court statement. The court statement doesn’t name the woman, who is widely reported to be the mother of his child. In Germany, a judge can hand out a penalty order in cases where the public prosecutor’s office does not believe a trial is necessary. The alleged injured party has joined the proceedings as a complainant, according to the court statement. Alexander Zverev, the German tennis star who is accused of physically abusing the mother of his child, was ordered by a court in Berlin to pay a fine in the case, his lawyers said on Tuesday. Zverev, 26, was ordered to pay an undisclosed amount of fines by a criminal court in Berlin for physically abusing and injuring Brenda Patea, a former partner, during an argument in May 2020. The tennis star denied the charges and objected to the fines, which would likely lead to a trial. He has been trailed for years by abuse accusations in a case involving another former partner, Olya Sharypova, a Russian former tennis player, who said that Zverev assaulted her in 2019.
